10 Simple Swaps for a Holistic & Non-Toxic Life (Easy Ways to Detox Your Home & Body)
Have you ever had a moment where you realized the “typical” way of living isn’t actually designed with your health in mind?
Maybe you read an ingredient label and realized you couldn’t pronounce half the words. Or maybe you learned that the U.S. allows chemicals in our products that other countries have banned (the US has banned less than 1% of chemicals in comparison to Europe). Or maybe you notice how much better you feel when you try real, whole foods and cleaner products. Have you ever been to Europe and realized you suddenly don’t have a bad response to the dairy or gluten there?
For me, that moment of clarity came when I started questioning why I had daily headaches, acne breakouts, mood swings, and energy crashes—issues I had accepted as “normal.”
Normalized, recurring inflammation is not natural.
I’d like to preface this post by saying that the way most of us have grown up is in a very “typical” way, with typical food, typical habits, and typical pain. Typical habits = typical pain and discomfort.
What most Americans are coming to learn is that the typical way of doing things is not the way that has our best interest, or our health, at heart. (Ever heard of the S.A.D diet?)
Here’s what we’ll cover in this post:
✅ - Why toxins in everyday products are affecting your health
✅ - How small swaps can create big results for your body and home
✅ - 10 easy non-toxic swaps to start feeling better today
✅ - Where to find safe, holistic alternatives (without feeling overwhelmed!)
Let’s dive in! 👇
As I grew up and into my 20s, I was living a lifestyle most people do at that age. Because of this, I was taking Excedrin Migraine like it was a daily vitamin! (My poor liver 😩). Not surprisingly, I was also having intense acne breakouts, and gaining belly fat for “no reason” at this time.
This is not normal. It has been normalized.
I began making changes in January of 2020, check out the difference here. ↑
The internal and the external are so deeply connected!
This shift is entirely from lifestyle changes and not from the gym or a fad diet.
A key turning point in my life was when I began my own shift into holistic health; I started reading labels, avoiding added sugars, adding in probiotics, reducing my bread intake, and no longer grocery shopping at Walgreens. (Seriously.)
~~~
As I began to research nutrition and cut out inflammatory foods, not only did my migraine frequency plummet, my skin became more clear than it had been in years, I began losing body fat without exercising, and I simply felt like a happier and more fulfilled person. It was at this time that I realized so many of the everyday products I had trusted were working against me and my health, and not for me.
This realization led me to follow my interests and turn them into certifications; after a few years of making holistic changes for myself, and seeing the positive changes, I went to school for holistic medicine and dove into the body’s innate healing ability, so I could assist others in experiencing the same changes. 🌱
This post will walk you through 10 easy swaps you can make starting today to start detoxifying your home, food, and daily habits.
Your Family’s Health is in Your Hands
What if I told you that most of the diseases we fear can be prevented by reducing our toxic load?
Not-so-fun fact:
Approximately 42% of cancer cases and 45% of cancer deaths are associated with lifestyle-related risk factors, including excess weight, poor diet, and physical inactivity. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and cancer have become the most common and costly health problems in the United States.
These conditions are driven by risk factors that are largely preventable.
~~~
✔ Your children’s future health is shaped by the choices you make today, many common household chemicals have been linked to developmental issues, hormone imbalances, and allergies.
✔ Hormone disruptors in food and beauty products can silently sabotage fertility and metabolism.
✔ Cancer-causing chemicals are still legally allowed in everyday items—from tap water to cookware to air fresheners.
✔ Brain fog, fatigue, and anxiety aren’t always “normal”—sometimes, they’re symptoms of toxin buildup.
Here’s the good news:
When you start making small changes, your body responds quickly. People who begin living a holistic lifestyle often see glowing skin, balanced hormones, better digestion, and a deep sense of vitality in a matter of weeks! —all from removing harmful exposures, and giving your body the chance to detoxify naturally, the way it is so capable of when it is not overwhelmed.
10 Simple Swaps for a Holistic & Non-Toxic Life
1. Swap Artificial Air Fresheners for Natural Scents
🚫 Out: Febreze, Glade, or synthetic candles (look for the word fragrance)
✅ In: Beeswax candles, essential oil diffusers, or simmer pots with citrus and herbs
2. Switch to Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
🚫 Out: Harsh chemical cleaners with ammonia and bleach
✅ In: Vinegar, baking soda, Castile soap, or brands like Koala Eco and Seventh Generation (my favorite linked here).
3. Upgrade Your Laundry Routine
🚫 Out: Conventional detergents with synthetic fragrances and optical brighteners
✅ In: Non-toxic detergents like Seventh Generation, wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. I use Koala Eco originally because it is plant based, but I am now on my third bottle because it makes the house smell so amazing! (Linked here).
4. Replace Plastic Food Containers with Glass or Silicone
🚫 Out: Plastic storage containers and plastic wrap -
Plastic containers (especially when heated) can release BPA, phthalates, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals into your food. These chemicals have been linked to hormone imbalances, fertility issues, and increased cancer risk.
✅ In: Glass containers, beeswax wraps, or silicone bags
Glass containers are non-toxic, do not leach harmful substances, and keep your food safe—even when microwaved or stored for long periods. I use these (I’m a sucker for bamboo!).
5. Filter Your Water for a Healthier Home
🚫 Out: Tap water filled with chlorine, fluoride, and heavy metals
Tap water often contains chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals (like lead and arsenic), pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues—many of which have been linked to hormone disruption, neurological damage, and increased cancer risk.
✅ In: A countertop filter like LifeStraw or an advanced system like Spring Aqua
A quality water filter removes these contaminants, giving you cleaner, safer drinking water for you and your family.
6. Choose Organic for the Dirty Dozen
🚫 Out: Pesticide-heavy produce (strawberries, spinach, kale, etc.)
Conventional produce from the Dirty Dozen list is heavily sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, many of which have been linked to hormone disruption, neurological damage, and cancer.
✅ In: Organic options for the worst offenders
Organic produce is grown without synthetic pesticides, reducing your exposure to toxic chemicals that accumulate in your body over time.

7. Switch to Safer Cookware
🚫 Out: Teflon and non-stick pans that release toxic chemicals
Teflon and non-stick pans are coated with PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), also known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals release toxic fumes when heated, which have been linked to hormone disruption, immune suppression, and even cancer.
We take a deep dive into PFAS in my guide along with other harmful chemicals that lurk in our everyday products.
✅ In: Stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware
Safer alternatives like stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic cookware do not release harmful chemicals, keeping your food (and body) toxin-free. Here is what I have.
8. Detox Your Skincare & Beauty Products
🚫 Out: Conventional lotions, shampoos, and deodorants with parabens and phthalates
✅ In: Non-toxic brands, or use the Yuka app (an absolute game changer) to scan for safe product recommendations
Choosing non-toxic, plant-based beauty products reduces your body's exposure to unnecessary toxins and helps your natural detox pathways work more efficiently. We go over ways to support your detox pathways in my guide. 🙂
9. Reduce Microplastics in Your Home
🚫 Out: Plastic water bottles, plastic cooking utensils, synthetic fabrics
Microplastics are everywhere—found in our blood, lungs, and even placentas—coming from plastic bottles, cooking utensils, and synthetic fabrics that break down over time.
They contain BPA and phthalates, which disrupt hormones, affect fertility, and increase the risk of metabolic disorders. Every time you wash synthetic clothes, they shed tiny plastic fibers that pollute waterways and harm marine life. Inside your home, plastic items release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), contributing to indoor air pollution and affecting your overall health.
This is an issue very close to my heart as these things affect not only us but our environment, it is all connected.
✅ In: Stainless steel water bottles, bamboo cooking tools, and natural fiber clothing
Reducing microplastics in your home helps protect your hormones, fertility, and long-term health by minimizing exposure to endocrine disruptors like BPA and phthalates. Switching to glass, stainless steel, and natural fabrics improves air quality, reduces indoor toxins, and prevents plastic particles from contaminating your food and water. Choosing sustainable alternatives also helps protect marine life, keep waterways clean, and lower plastic pollution, creating a healthier home and planet for future generations. 🌿✨
10. Prioritize Sleep & Stress Management
🚫 Out: Blue light at night, late-night scrolling, and synthetic bedding
Blue light at night suppresses melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep and disrupting your body’s natural sleep cycle—leading to poor rest, brain fog, and increased stress levels.
Late-night scrolling overstimulates the nervous system, keeping your brain in an alert state, which can contribute to anxiety, difficulty unwinding, and restless sleep.
Synthetic bedding traps heat and contains chemical residues, which can cause skin irritation, overheating, and exposure to toxins that affect respiratory health—all making it harder for your body to fully recharge.
We also want to keep our air quality in mind, especially if we have pets. Using an air purifier (or plants!) can really assist with clean breathing air. Here is what I have.
Additionally, your body does a large majority of it’s detoxing while you sleep, so making this a time when your body can most efficiently rest is only in your best interest.
✅ In: Blue light blockers, organic cotton bedding, and relaxation practices like yoga nidra
Blocking blue light at night supports natural melatonin production, helping you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed.
Swapping late-night scrolling for relaxation practices like yoga nidra calms the nervous system, reducing stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue while promoting deep rest. Check out my Youtube channel for free Yoga Nidra mediations.
Choosing organic cotton bedding creates a breathable, toxin-free sleep environment, reducing skin irritation and improving comfort, temperature regulation, and overall sleep quality—allowing your body to fully restore itself each night.
Instead of taking synthetic melatonin, try a natural sleep aid like You’re a Knockout by Ora Organic which supports your body’s own melatonin production, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep without dependency. 🌙✨
